The MCM Teams Fave Comics

If you’re a comic newbie or veteran looking for the next best read, our team sent in some of their recent faves to add to your to-be-read pile!

Charlotte: After the Umbrella Academy ended on Netflix, I decided to read the comics and have really enjoyed them so far. I also picked up True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys by Gerard Way. As a huge My Chemical Romance fan it was a nostalgic read...can they release MCR5 already please?!

Chris: My comic pick Daredevil: Born Again by Frank Miller and David Mazzuchelli. Yes yes, there is going to be a Disney+ series soon, but this 1986 storyline is in my opinion the greatest superhero comic book of all time. The late 1980s were a sort of renaissance for American comics, with the masters of the form pushing the boundaries of the form to tell more mature, adult stories. Legendary writer Frank Miller (Sin City300) who is known for some of the best crime/noir comics ever spins what many call the “the definitive Daredevil story”. Paired with collaborator David Mazzuchelli, who’s visuals are crisp and clean, easy to follow and features some of the most thrilling action ever put to page. The two would later re-team for the equally seminal Batman: Year One.

It serves as both a perfect self-contained introduction to the character of Daredevil and what makes him so special, his rivalry with the Kingpin and his place in the Marvel Universe. The book is widely regarded as the high watermark future DD writers have been chasing for decades. This book is nearly 40 years old and yet feels as modern, contemporary and cutting edge as any book that has come since.

Alex: The new Daredevil written by Saladin Ahmed has been fantastic. The Daredevil comic has had a long history of the same writing team since the relaunch with Kevin Smith in 1998. Ahmed has come in after a long and wonderful run by Chip Zdarsky and planted his feet. After a seemingly “death” in the previous run we see Matt Murdock alive and well, living in hells kitchen as is a priest. With some memory lose about his time as daredevil, he quickly regroups and remembers just in time to save the day, as per usual. It’s God Vs Demons as Daredevil and Wife Elektra (Also dressed as Daredevil) hunt down old foes who are now possessed by demons themselves! ClassicDD with a twist. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

Fallon: My favourite comic is Loki #2 by Daniel Kibblesmith. This is a whole comic book dedicated to Loki’s banter with Tony Stark and Thor and it’s absolutely delightful for fans of the character. In the comic, Loki genuinely wants to joint he Avengers and be a Midgardian hero. You see Loki at his best—he’s a king, he’s getting along with his brother, he’s saved the world, people actually kind of like him now, and he just isn’t sure he wants to retire to his reign on an ice planet. He’s too “young and beautiful” as he says. He’s no longer the God of Mischief or lies or evil. So that begs the question… who is he? And what does he do now?

I didn’t start reading comics until the first Thor film. But when I started to read Thor and Loki comics, they felt hard to follow for someone who hadn’t read more of the Marvel catalogue. I felt like I was missing key pieces of each story. This story was really accessible from the start for someone who was a casual fan and found comics through the MCU. Both the story and artwork are equally intriguing. It has action, humour, drama, and magic, and it captured all the reasons why Loki is my favourite character. He was charismatic and fun, while stirring up the mischief and tricks we’re so used to. Unfortunately, this run ended before it’s time (in my opinion), but the whole collection can be found in Loki: The God Who Fell to Earth [Loki (2019) #1-5] and is absolutely worth the read for any Loki fans.
