Sam J. Jones, best known for playing the iconic hero of 1980 sci-fi classic Flash Gordon, is to make his MCM London Comic Con debut when Britain’s biggest modern pop culture festival returns to ExCel this May.
After getting his big break in Dudley Moore rom-com 10, Jones was cast as intergalactic hero Flash Gordon in Mike Hodges’ movie adaptation of the famous comic strip, sharing the screen with Melody Anderson as female lead Dale Arden, Max von Sydow as Emperor Ming the Merciless and Brian Blessed, who gives an iconic performance as Prince Vultan.
Featuring an over-the-top, camp style reminiscent of the ‘60s Batman TV series and backed by a memorable rock soundtrack by Queen, Flash Gordon has become a cult favourite with sci-fi and comic book fans alike, with the likes of director Edgar Wright and comic artist Alex Ross numbered amongst its many fans.
In fact, Flash Gordon’s status as a pop culture icon remains strong to this day, with Sam J. Jones recently called on to make extended cameos in hit Seth MacFarlane comedy Ted and its 2015 sequel (complete with his blond Flash Gordon hairdo). Other guest appearances over the years include Stargate SG-1, Baywatch, Walker: Texas Ranger and The A-Team.
