Best known for playing Barristan Selmy in Game of Thrones and General Dodonna in Rogue One, Ian McElhinney is the latest sci-fi and fantasy star to join a Birmingham Comic Con guest list that already features the likes of Anthony Daniels, Pearl Mackie, David Bradley and Warwick Davis.
The Belfast born actor’s recent appearance as Rebel general Jan Dodonna in sci-fi blockbuster Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was a cameo calculated to delight fans of the Star Wars universe. Portrayed in A New Hope by the late Alex McCrindle, Dodonna is one of the Alliance’s most important military commanders and advisors, overseeing the Rebel victory at the Battle of Yavin that resulted in the destruction of the first Death Star.
Moving from one well-respected military man to another, Ian McElhinney’s five season sojourn on hit HBO fantasy series Game of Thrones saw him portray Ser Barristan Selmy, one of the few truly honourable characters in a series awash with treachery, skulduggery and deceit. A veteran knight and formidable swordsman, Ser Barristan was a loyal Lord Commander of the Kingsguard before his dismissal by callow and callous King Joffrey. Free to serve a more deserving ruler, the aging warrior joins the banner of Daenerys Targaryan.
Ian’s other credits include Ripper Street, The Tudors, Barbarians Rising, Murphy’s Law, Rebellion, Taggart, Cold Feet and award-winning crime drama The Fall, while he also recently appeared in six-part EastEnders spin-off Kat & Alfie: Redwater.
